5 ways to remember neuroanatomy

Neuroanatomy is one of the most intimidating parts of any neuroscience degree. You're asked to memorise dozens of structures, their locations, and their functions — often in a matter of weeks. Rote repetition rarely works. Here are five approaches that do.

1. Use spatial anchoring. The brain is a physical object. Instead of learning names in isolation, build a mental map. Use a 3D brain atlas or a tactile model and trace pathways physically. When you associate a name with a location you can visualise, the memory is dramatically more durable.

2. Connect structure to function. It's far easier to remember that the hippocampus is involved in memory consolidation than to remember where it sits in a vacuum. Always ask: what happens when this structure is damaged? What does the patient presentation tell you? Clinical cases embed anatomy into context.

3. Draw it repeatedly. Active retrieval beats passive re-reading. Close the textbook and draw the brain from memory. Identify every structure you can, then check. The errors are the learning. Do this once a day for two weeks and the retention is striking.

4. Teach it out loud. The Feynman technique works. Explain the limbic system, the basal ganglia, or the visual cortex as if you're teaching a GCSE student. If you hesitate or generalise, you've found a gap. Fill the gap, then teach it again.

5. Space your review strategically. Massed practice (cramming) creates the illusion of learning. Spaced repetition — reviewing material at increasing intervals — produces actual long-term retention. Use Anki or a similar tool, and start building your deck in week one, not the week before exams.

None of these techniques require talent. They require consistency and the willingness to feel uncertain while you're learning. That discomfort is normal — it's the sensation of your brain forming new connections.
